Press Ad – The Day After

Its cost so much to advertise in newspapers these days.

Yes, the newspapers goes out to millions.

And end up as "Used Newspapers" or "Waste" the day after.

The cost of putting a full-page full-color advertisement in the nation’s main newpaper can feed 20 small families for a month.

Enough Said.

*At least these "waste" are worth some money to retirees who rely on them for a living.

Mobile Ads – Pain In The ASS

I believed this is not my first article on Mobile Phone Advertising. No. We are talking about the brands here. I am referring to unsolicited SMSes that carries an advertisement message sent into your mobole phone message inbox.

It has been a couple of years since this form of advertising started, but it has certainly gotten more irritating and distruptive to people’s personal lives.

Recently, I started receiving a series of SMS-Ads again. It came from "Trivia 72233" and it ends the message with "$4 Charged" and there are no numbers to call if I opt to cancle or reject such SMSes. Finally I called my mobile service provider and gotten the number to a company in Singapore (65713999) and I ordered them to stop sending the SMS to me else I will take this up to the Media Authority of Singapore (MDA) since they are the regulating authority for broadcasts.

And the shock too, when I was told by my mobile service provider that a total of $32 was already charged to my bill for the coming invoice.

It’s not the money, it’s the irritation that each user encountered whenever such an SMS comes unsolicited.

I disputed the amount.

But baffled me most was the brands that actually engaged such companies or use such a media.

The SMSes I received is always either on an "Apple MacBook" or "iPod Nano".

This has created a bad vibes on these products and of the brand too.

All it takes was the SMS to reach an individual who had a bad day. Apple may lose this customer for life.

Get it?

Family Ads – Local vs Foreign

I am sure many of you would have seen the below ad from www.thinkfamily.sg

I’ve gotten the uncut version from youtube below for your viewing.

Not exactly pulling heartstrings, but the message is clearly sent.

Here’s what other countries are doing to improve family ties.

What Is Your FOCUS?

What Is Your Focus?
StabFocus_edited.jpg picture by Viviobluerex
A Landlord called me today.

She said "that irritating digital media company" called her again.

I giggled a little. Why?

This particular Landlord is from a "Shopping Centre in the East of Singapore". We had managed the advertising for the mall for 2 years already and there’s 2 more years to go before the contract matures. We know the place inside out and upside down. We know almost every single tenants there and we know how exactly these fellas behave. We know their demands and we know what to do with them.

Then out of nowhere, this digital media company started to take interests and focusing on winning this site.

No wonder the Landlord keep asking us if we want to do the digital advertising part or let another media player do it.

I told the Landlord to appoint "this media company" by all means. Let them have a "taste" of dealing with the tenants at this shopping mall.

If it is profitable, we would have done it 2 years ago when we took over the shopping mall.

My company started off as a Digital Media Company before we turn full-fledge Out-Of-Home. Reason? If there’s enough money to be made in Digital Media, why would we want to stray off into OOH? We never looked back since we shifted. Even though our Digital Media business recently got a revival, we are not as keen as this "digital media company" that strayed off their main focus". Why I say so? Venturing into heartland is never their operandi modus, they are concentrated in CBD Areas and good at targeting PEMBs, not HDB Aunties. It’s clear they are losing focus and way too off..

So I was quite amused by them taking interest in this shopping mall and approaching this Landlord.

Maybe I should start approaching their Landlords and start to "attack" their sites too. All along I left their sites alone, never expect them to be so desperate and hard-up for a "B-Grade" Shopping Mall. They must be suffering from a huge lose of sales from their other sites.

There are only so many Media Companies in Singapore, we should all be trying to look at a compromised environment, a balance and try to
co-exist together. What good are there if everyone tries to kill everyone? The smaller companies will suffer and the "Big Boys" will watch the spectacular and once the opportunity strikes, they will wipe everyone out of the market.

The advertisers and the Landlords will laugh all the way to the bank.

We should all stay focus on improving the sales volume and remain competitive, not focus on how to distrupt other players’ peaceful life.

Hmmmmm, Let’s see what’s the number to this "Building" inside "Central Business District"………

OOH Media – The New Market Leader
The advertising trend have Shifted!

Over the last few years, we have seen many outdoor areas being converted into advertising sites. With new advertising spots mushrooming at an alarming rate, more media companies are venturing into this paticular media segment, trying their marketing effectiveness in this as yet under-developed market.

From the usual outdoor billboards, OOH Media has evolved into something more complex, more sub-categories than any other media type in the market. Choices now include Outdoor Digital, Coveted OOH Media, Bluetooth Broadcast, Advertisement Showcase, Theme Kiosks, Transportation and many more. With so many options reaching out to a diversified eyeball population, OOH advertisers are spoilt for choice.

Agencies around the world have reported a steadily increasing allocation of advertising budgets for OOH Media since 2005 and more advertisers are exploring  using OOH Media for their marketing campaigns. Although OOH Media is not exactly a cheap option (it is getting more expensive by the year) advertisers have found the value of OOH Media to far surpass what traditional media can offer.

"The difference is that alternative OOH has proven a far stronger and reliable media platform to deliver rifle-shot messages, versus traditional media." www.golfgreenmedia.com/programs/category/experiential/

"Traditional media shows more signs of weakness, but ooh ad networks may offer hope – more signs of the uncertain times ahead for traditional media in this country have emerged over the past few weeks." jannathammavong.blogspot.com/2008/09/why-shouldn’t-t-tradditional-media.html

"It is no secret that marketing dollars are "slowly" moving away from traditional media into alternative media channels, such as the Internet and Out-of-Home Media." www.greatoutdoornetwork.com/GON/content/view/230/97/ www.mediabuyerplanner.com/2008/09/03/nielsens-first-ooh-ratings-fox-wins-big-cable-is-comparable/

In view of such a niche, more OOH Media companies serving a specific market. Given the shift to become the new market leader for media advertising, OOH Media Companies should seek to co-exist with each other, creating more unique products within their arena and maintain their status as a media segment, even so as the new market lead. @

The Next MOST Expensive TVC Star?

Was having a chat with a production house manager and he popped a question.

"Who do you think will be the most expensive and most influential TV Commercial Star to engage from this quarter onwards?"

I pondered a while.

I replied; "Obama".

He freaked out.
