Dreaded April of 2009

The air of retrenchment hung low and eerily close.

Everyone is worried about their jobs. People around me seems unsettled. The local media is not helping by announcing the possible high retrenchment rate in the coming April 2009. Many MNCs ends their financial year in every March, thus April will be a new year in corporate language. To start off the new financial year slim with cost-cutting measures in mind, many will fall victim to the bad economy by getting axed.

A typical job ad in the press will attract thousands of applicants, the Recruit segment of our national newspaper are getting so thin that I thought it was a Special Feature section. (Joe, sounds familiar?) And visibly, there are more people lining up at Walk-In Interviews and the recently Career Fair at Suntec also saw an incredible increased of visitorship as compared to previous years.

Overheard at a trade event recently;

A: "I am employing now and I am afraid to advertise on the newspaper."
B: "Why so?"
A: "The last time I placed an advertisement for an Admin Clerk, I received almost 4000 applications!"
B: "Oh! That is overwhelming! Isn’t it good that now you have many choices to pick the right candidate?"
A: "The problem now is, who is going to go through the resumes and interview the candidates? It will take months to complete!"

And spotted on a Business Forum;

"When I received the hundreds of resumes, I have no choice but to separate them into the following order;
Expensive Singaporeans, Less Expensive Malaysians, Cheap Indonesians, Cheaper Thai & Filipinos, Even Cheaper Indians/ Bangladeshis and Cheapest   China Mainlanders. With average wages dropping on the lower end of the scale, there is little choice but to employ from the lowest of the scale. Quality is second when it comes to cost saving"

The job market is not what it used to be anymore. In 1998 during the Asian Financial Crisis, we employers do not have so much "alternatives" right?

Don’t you dread this April?

LinkedIn

Hi everyone.

I believed everyone at some point of their life ventured into social websites out of curiosity or boredom.

I am also very sure all of you are very familiar with sites like Live Space, MySpace, Tagged, Friendster, Facebook, Habbo among others.

However I find such sites very much an environment for "cyber trash", which I, admittedly ventured into some of the above before too.

My mind changed when I found http://www.linkedin.com when I was having some fun searching for my name on google.

It is not exactly a social site, but more of a business networking site where you can have your profile doubling as your professional experience (resume) while maintaining contacts with your clients, colleagues etc. This site can be also be used as a "virtual database" where your individual contacts maintains and update their own contact details, employment and business details.

Still figuring out what exactly it is?

Check out  My Business Profile. over at Linked In.

Some Words of Wisdom For My Staff

Today "happened" to be the "Staff Performance Review Day"

For a staff whom recently got herself lots of attention from both colleagues and bosses.
“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” – Sun Tzu

For a staff who had improved himself over the months and breaking new grounds.
“If you are far from the enemy, make him believe you are near.” – Sun Tzu

For a staff who was discouraged but remained focus and working hard.
“Thus, what is of supreme importance in war is to attack the enemy’s strategy.” – Sun Tzu

For a staff who had performed beyond her call of duty and was not appreciated.
“For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.”  – Sun Tzu

I am glad today had passed.

So glad.

A Matter Of Choice

With an array of mixed feelings, I am typing out this entry.

I’ve learnt something meaningful over the weekend.

A business associate in his early 60s was sharing his life lessons with me over coffee at a top hotel in Batam.

As a General Manager, I can say he is "lonely at the top", as I always sees him pottering around the hotel greeting people from all levels but always dined alone. I guess that, is part of the "package" being a Resident General Manager in a foreign shore.

We were chatting as usual.

He spoke about how our then PM LKY was telling Xingaporeans to look outside Sillypore for better opportunities in the early 90s. He told me he was glad that he "listened" to him and he never return to Sillypore ever since! He is not wrong. Being early 60s and without a "good" qualification, what career path will he have in "paper-driven" Sillypore? By working hard will not lead him to anywhere. He may be regarded as "experienced", but do not forget that many others will view him as "expired".  He even told me that if he had stayed in Sillypore, he may end up collecting soiled plates at a foodcourt versues now, being a GM of a 4 Star Hotel at a nearby country.

When I told him that since he had worked for so many years maybe he should consider retiring. He told me he is already glad that he is not retrenched. Humorous man I would say. But I’ve learnt a great deal from him. He put me in the correct perspective about working in a third world country and how adaptive one must be especially when you come from a developed country.

Sometimes we just take things for granted and becomes complacent.

I’ve learnt sometimes basic is much better than branded.

Life is all about being simple. Especially working life.

Alternative Words

We all know that words can kill, words can affect major decision and words can manipulate the world if you know what to say, what to write and what words to use against the various type of people.

With extensive (multiple, great numbers) use of alternative words to express ourselves, indirectly to let the listener end up confused or unsure, or worse, they don’t understand, you are on the right track to the correct use of word manipulation.

To alleviate (ease, reduce) uncalled (unnecessary) confusions, try to abstain from using an appreciable (large, great) amount of vocabulary which are not usually anticipated (expected) during a conversation, unless that is the intention, which is designed to confuse the listener. A simple conversation may constitute (make up) several objectives which evince (show, prove) the intent when the speaker chooses the right words for the right effect in order to reach the intended effect.

By employing (using) axiomatic (obvious) terms and the tactful deployment of key words into the conversation, the recipient of these words will construe (interpret) in many possibilities of what the speaker is trying to put across, often leading to detrimental (harmful, damaging) impressions especially if the setting is in an office environment. Often, such recipients will try to circumvent (get round, circle) the conversation while thinking of an "escape" topic and sometimes even forced or cornered to concur (agree) with the speaker. Most times, the recipient will be subjected to an unreasonable amount of erroneous (wrong, untrue, unproven) claims or insinuation (implying, words with implications) that is very unilateral (one-sided, one-way).

Scary?

To counter such speakers with a penchant for alternative words, you have to ascertain (find out) what exactly is the person trying to put across and make the person elucidate (explain, make clear) his points in details. Explain to the speaker that you are not blessed with the gift to envisage (expect, imagine) the "hidden" message embedded within the words. Apprise (inform) the speaker that by speaking in such a manner, it will jeopardize (risk, threaten) working relationship and productivity. The magnitude (size) of a problem/issue can be unfairly magnified leaving innocent colleagues to face with judgments or worse, losing their jobs.

Apart from words in the form of conversations, be wary of written words emanating (originating, source) from such a person too. Peruse (read, read carefully, look at) at the contents of the message and read over a couple of time just to be sure. You may just be lucky enough to discover words that are denoting (showing) secondary meanings. That too, depicts (shows) the true intention of the message. Scrutinize (read <look at> carefully) every word for the predominant (main) point.

Henceforth (from now, from today), ameliorate (improve, help) the communication between yourself and such a person by using alternative words too. This person will be surprised and shocked with your sudden use of colorful vocabularies as he/she thinks that no one in the same office can be as efficient as him/her when it comes to discharging alternative words hitherto (until now) onto a fellow colleague. Reiterate (repeat, restate) all words, both spoken and written, back unto this person, let this person domicile (live in, live with) in his own doings and experience a taste of his own medicine.

Not everyone is bestow (give, award) with the gift of words. So do not try to be too colorful with your alternative words. Sometimes being direct is better while avoiding misunderstandings. Do not forget many businesses failed due to office politics.

Promulgate (advertise, announce) yourself clearly the next time you are tempted to use alternative words.

Oops, had I been too colorful with my "England"?

Do You Shout At Your Boss?

Do you shout at your Boss?

Did you ever shouted at your Boss?

Will you even think of shouting at your Boss?

Some people just did that.

Shouting & talking back to your Boss will normally end up with One Conclusion.

The person will be packing within the same day.

Whether a Boss is right or wrong, never ever shout back or talk back. You may be angry or heated, but this person whom you are shouting at is ALSO responsible for your Bonus, Increment and Promotion. Let the Boss rant all that he/she wants and when he/she is cooled down, go talk to him/her with a different approach.

Don’t forget, he/she is NOT your friend, No Matter who is right or wrong, your job is dependant on him/her.

A staff whom I have been trying to shield her from "Axes" just did that to me. I’ve done a lot for her without she knowing. I had been super lenient and understanding to her personal problems and had been very giving to her special requests for time-off and early release.

Given my explosive temper, I would have hang up the phone and order her to pack her stuff.

Instead, I tried reasoning with her.

Ridiculous.

I am ridiculous to even try to reason.

She’s lucky today. Very lucky.
