Bus Advertising – The Real Deal

Bus Ads are especially entertaining when you spend lots of time on the road.

I find out local bus advertisements a tad too conservative sometimes, at least when compared to the examples through an email I’ve received from a Media Planner.

*See how the creatives made use of the wheels of the bus, the pic show a bus wheel can double as a vinyl spin disk.

The below bus wheels doubled as "Eyes" for a mascara ad.

National Geographic Channel’s clever use of the automatic doors to depict the wide jaws of a shark.

Smint’s "Kissing" Doors.

The bus wheels can be even used as the lens of a camera!

Tiernitos’s Dog Feed (Heinz) make sure the dogs runs faster than a bus.

Even the bus’s exhaust can be put to good use for the below anti-smoking ad.

I believed these ads won’t find their way to SG.

Amazing Ad Campaigns

I find the below 2 advertisements amazing.

1) Jim Beam’s Outdoor Campaign at Las Vegas.
Wanna guess how much vinyl sticker were used for this?

2) (GoVeg.com)PETA’s ad campaign on encouraging people to go vegetarian.
Isn’t this is where it hit most? Whatever parts human has, an animal have the same too.
Dun get me wrong, I love my steak, but this ad creative definitely makes me think twice the next time I am ordering meat.
I have been going green for a few days every month by the way…..

Congrats, You Are Known As…

Sorry for the absence, been really busy at Work.

I have 2 great stories here to share.

A landlord called us up and inviting us to "Market" their outdoor advertising space for them.
So we went to meet up with this MCST…

MCST : I would like to offer you our 2 outdoor facade to sell outdoor advertising, can You send me a proposal?
Me : But there are 3 facades.
MCST : Yes, but the current media company, TerribleArt has renewed one of the facades.
Me : Since this company had been marketing your site, wouldn’t it be funny if you have 2 different media companies marketing different areas of your site?
MCST : No it won’t.
Me : We had experienced that before and the whole industry is confused to who is exactly selling. And I do not entertain sites that are Non-exclusive.
MCST : These 2 facades are not bad, why don’t you take a look at it?
Me : If these 2 facades are so good, then why would TerribleArt just renewed 1 of the 3?
MCST : Er….
Me : Are you trying to get us to take over some "leftover" sites?
MCST : No, but….
Me : Let me tell you, we may not be big, but we work with a pride, please find another media owner.
MCST : You sure? Come on, its a good site.
Me : Ask your TerribleArt take over lor, since you claimed to be so good. And for the last 9 months that I drove past your building, I have never seen an advertisement on it before. Who are you trying to fool?
MCST : Can lah Can lah, please send me a proposal…
Me : I’d think about it. (And left)

Conclusion : There are various types of landlord when it comes to Outdoor Advertising. Some are simply ignorant when it comes to appointing a media agent.
They only look at the company and what they are offering, but they didn’t bother about track records and credibility. And in some cases like the one I just shared above, what this landlord is doing is basically ruining his own reputation by doing something as idiotic as this.

Good luck to this idiotic pair of MCST and TerribleArt.

And then again, there are another tye of landlord who basically knows nothing about advertising and yet, "pokes" his/her nose into every details.
Let’s see the story below…

At a Landlord Meeting…..

LL : So you want to add these new sites to the existing ones?
Me : Yes. This will increase the overall billing…
LL : But these are the sites we use for A & P..
Me : A & P dun use all year round right?
LL : Yes, but I am afraid that it will mess up my mall frontage.
Me : But these are premium sites.
LL : Yes, I know.

The story goes on… I left that meeting sore and bitter. What an idiot.

No wonder this landlord got abandoned by another Media Giant before we took over.

No one can stand this landlord. I am still deciding to renew this site or not, given the stupidity and ignorance of this landlord, no point wasting time and effort.
If they wish to renew, renew, if not, nevermind. Without them, my company still has many other sites.

Idiots.

Alcohol Advertisements

Last week, one of the landlords rejected our advertisment copy for a Bar Advertiser.

I got shocked when the ad copy was rejected citing the ad is not in-line

with the site’s branding and to be seen as promoting vice.

I questioned on the reason behind the rejection and was told the ad was not

tastefully done. I almost exploded. The ad copy is probably one of the
"cleanest" ad with alcohol elements in it.

Now I wonder if he will die of shock if any of the below advertisements

hit this site.

Its already 2008 and we still have people living on 1980s’ beliefs and as conservative
as a prick! The below ads will freak him out!

Rivalry Marketing

Do you know what is rivalry marketing? Heard of it?
It’s like You advertising your competitors’ products in a bad light or
throw their consumers/customers off their brand loyalty…
The below is one great example of Rivalry Marketing. On first look,
it looked everything a "KFC" advertisement. Well, on closer look,
or read the fine prints on the lower portion of the ad, its actually
from McDonald’s.

The creative depicts a Fat Obesed Kid holding to KFC’s flagship meal

and key menu products. The Slogon was changed to "You’ve got Great taste"
probably done so the sarcastic effect is stronger. It also tries to say eating KFC products
makes you fat and overweight, unhealthy…etc.

I am sure if this is done in Singapore, lawsuits will follow….

Picking the Right Spot to Advertise

Picking the right location to do outdoor advertising is very important.

Picking a right location to do a cutting-edge creative outdoor advertising is most important.

Would you agree with my statement?

Let’s see some case study below..

1) Gucci
– Did you spot the "Special Landscaping" of the ad?
The ad incorporated a clever use of the existing landscaping of the
building which has trees and vegetations right above the advertisement.
Now this ad is really bigger than it actually is!
GUCCI.jpg picture by Viviobluerex

2) Motorola – MotoDanica
The campaign is for a futuristic Bluetooth Earpiece which is promoting
its use to being "cyber", or "robotic" purely on the theme of Sophistication.
A building facade coincidentally has sun shining on 1 side and none on the other

becomes the perfect choice for this creative. See below and you know what I mean.
moto_danica.jpg picture by Viviobluerex

3) Vanity Fair Lingerie
– The flood light meant to illuminate this advertisment in the night
becomes a "cover" over the bra in the nippies area. Hahaha.
Probably the agency that book this site didn’t do a sunlight check.
sun_god_billboard.jpg picture by Viviobluerex

4) Ford – Mustang "Drive By".
– Its not easy coming up with an innovative car ads these days.
Many parameters had been exploited and ideas used and reused.
This ad below only has the "Mustang" at the corner of the ad.
Strategically meant to create a "quick drive by" feel, the coconut trees
were considered part of the ad.

And using the transparent board that was made of GE Lexan EXL semi-transparent resin,
it gives a "blurs the scene" behind it regardless of the weather and created the impression
that the car was so fast to even capture it on camera.
mustang_blur.jpg picture by Viviobluerex

5) Below is actually 2 different advertisers with 2 different ads advertising
on the same location on different panels.

It is pretty clear that the "Swimsuit 2007" was installed earlier before

the mineral water ad. Being "Cheeky", a "straw" were purposely made
so long that it stretches from the ad all the way to the "mouth" of the model in
the other advertisement. I wonder how will that SwimSuit Advertiser react.
Bet the marketing person hadn’t seen this.
dasani_sportsillustrated.jpg picture by Viviobluerex

So before you embark on the great outdoors, better ask your ad agency or creative
agency to do some "ground check" to prevent embarassment or
unexpected results.

Bleah.
