Singtel, MobileOne & Starhub

Before I start this post, I would like to thank everyone for the positive comments for my "Car Ads Series". I enjoyed putting that series together as much as you enjoyed watching it. Thanks again!

————————————————————————–

In Singapore, and if you owns a mobile phone, you are mostly to be subscribed to a operator that’s either Singtel, MobileOne or Starhub.

Look at the pic below.

light_01.jpg picture by Viviobluerex

I know it’s just a picture of a traffic light, but why?

Singtel is the first mobile phone operator and the very first telephone company in Singapore. So in term of placing, Singtel gets the top place. Likewise, on the traffic lights, you get to see Red on the top.

MobileOne came during early 90s and took Singapore by storm. Singaporeans were happy that the Singtel monopoly was broken finally. So being second on the scene, you get to see amber Yellow on the cente of the traffic lights.

Then came Starhub in during the early 2000s. Starhub took on the offensive stance and marketing hard "rewriting" the costs of handset costs and offered Singaporeans with incredible subscription rates. Till today, it remains one of the most favourite operator among the mobile phone users’ community. So since Starhub came last, it gotten the lower position being Green.

Coincidence?

Now link it up from a driver’s point of view since Traffic Lights are the tools of our discussion today. As a driver,
RED – I hate Red lights, it means delay.
Amber Yellow – I don’t mind the amber Yellow as it depends where is my location when the light turns.
Green -And of course, every other driver that I knew loves Green, including me. It means Go!

Now another set of analogy,

Red Singtel is not as popular these days due to the higher charges for subscription rates as compared to the other 2 operators. When I was on Singtel, and that’s when I got my first mobile phone, I remember the charges were sky high. Haha. Every month when the bill came, I am in for a "surprise". If not due to work, I would have kept my "Pager" and dumped the phone back then.

Amber Yellow MobileOne is an operator that either you love it or you hate it. I am on M1 now, and since my first complaint in 1998 on the high number of dropped calls at the place I lived, it’s been 10 years already and they have done nothing to it. How I know? The dropped calls or the unstable signals still happens until this very day. Sadly, I am still on MobileOne till today.

Green Starhub may be the "Green Horn" when they came into the picture, I am sure you would have remembered the newspaper reports about its frequent glitches since it started. I took up a second line from Starhub to supplement my M1 line. After I started using the phone, everything seems ok. But the bills was nowhere to be found, they didn’t send me any. After about 7 months, I received a bill from Starhub for $1500+ and due 4 days later. I remember that year and I freaked out and called the Starhub operator. I cancelled my line with Starhub and never look back again. ha ha ha.

But NOW.

A new regulation was passed recently, now anyone can retain their mobile number even if they switch operator, the real fun begins.

MobileOne has been rather aggressive on Outdoor Media and TVC recently, Starhub is closing in on M1 and hey, where’s Singtel man? (Mediaedge:CIA & Kinetic Worldwide, something has to be done soon!!!!)

I am definitely switching. How to trust a Mobile Operator that has not resolved a complaint that was made 10 years ago?

My favourite colour is red, but as a driver, I love Green.

Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?Red or Green?

Email me at media_world@live.com and tell me what do you think? To Switch or not to Switch? If Switch, Red or Green?

Car Ads Part 8 – Mitsuoka

Mitsuoka cars are retro-weird, well at least to me.

Below are some of the rare TVCs that this Jap car maker has produced.

Car Ads Part 7 – Daihatsu

Welcome to Car Ads Part 7.

Daihatsu has very little following in SG. Why? Simple answer. Have you ever seen a Daihatsu Car commercial on our TV?

Daihatsu Sirion –
(Also in guises of Toyota Passo, Perodua Myvi). Sirion has another performance version call Boonx4.
The TVC below is funny and defines all the features of this car.

Daihatsu YRV Turbo –
The YRV has a non-Turbo version too. The YRV is the result of Toyota-Daihatsu’s combi design team.
40% of the parts in the YRV literally carries the "Toyota" Logo including the DVVT (VVTi-L) engine.

Daihatsu Copen –
One of the most talkabout K Car from Japan. Looks like a mini Audi TT from almost every angle. At 660CC, this turbocharged K Car offers one of the most interesting package as compared to other performance K Car including the electric foldable hardtop. Build at a separate plant in Japan away from the main Daihatsu plant, the Copen has the higest number of QC checks compared to its other siblings.

Daihatsu Terios –
(Also Toyota Rush & Perodua Nautical) By the way, the previous generations of Terios never came to Singapore.

Daihatsu Materia –
(Also known as Toyota Bb. A Perodua version is on its way, launching 2011) A car that you like or hate at first sight, the Materia is larger than life and has probably the most spacious interior for a hatch this size.

Daihatsu Sirion – Previous Generation Sirion
Below is the TVC for the Australian market for the previous version of the Sirion. It did not do quite well in SG though.

Daihatsu Cuore –
Below is the TVC for the newer Cuore for the Euro market.
The previous version of the Cuore is the current Kelisa from Perodua. In Japan there’s also a rare version "Cuore Trevis" featuring classic headlights and wood trim all over the dash area (In the rework body of the previous Cuore or see below.)

Daihatsu Mira –
The previous version of Mira is the current infamous Perodua Kanchil. The newer Mira was marketed very differently from the past versions. It is now a "City Executive" car. The last Mira is a performance unit with a Turbo and a strong contender in KCGT Races.

Daihatsu Tanto –
This is a "remake" car from its Toyota sibling, Toyota Sienta minus the sleekier line and sliding rear doors.

Daihatsu Latte (Move version B) –
Very funny TVC. The older Move once rocked K Car enthusiasts all over the world. This new version Latte Move is targeting females. In fact most of the "remake" hatches from Daihatsu are all targeting ladies in Japan. Not forgetting the guys, Turbocharged versions of newly launched models will come months later, very typical of Daihatsu. The older version of Move is also the current Perodua Kenari.

Daihatsu Trevis –
Marketed as a Playful and Elegant car for young families and executives, this car is still very Cuore (Kelisa) except the rework design on details like the trim, retro headlights and front grille treatment.

Daihatsu Move Custom –
Interesting ad. Nice effects. This is the replacement for the previous successful and more performance-based Move Custom.

Daihatsu Move –
This is the car that once rocked performance K Car fans. Now still available in the form of Perodua Kenari, minus the performance.

Daihatsu Pyzar –
MPV? SUV? U decide. The Pyzar is Daihatsu’s attempt at attractive the "Crossovers market".

Daihatsu Midget II –
The original Midget goes back as far as late 1960s. Below the current version in Japan. Very "Daihatsu".

Hope you guys like this episode.

Do make a guess which Jap brand cars will I be featuring next.

See you soon!

Suzuki Escudo/ Vitara –

Suzuki WagonRR –

Car Ads Part 5 – Mazda

I know many of you must be thinking, what’s with my sudden obsession with Car TVCs, what’s got into me…etc.

I am perfectly fine, just feel that the Automotive Industry is too big to ignore with the kind of marketing budget they spent every year.

And some of the TVCs are actually enjoyable to watch, especially those with story lines.

Right now, let’s move our attention to another big player in the Japanese cars market, Mazda.

Mazda 2 –
The below campaign for Mazda2 that I picked is very interesting. The ads is executed with a "game" & a promotion to advertise the car.

Mazda 3 –
I selected this version because of the clever and extensive use of special effects and computer wizary.

Mazda 5 –
This version is interesting and it does carries a message. It sells; "Driving MPV can be Sexily Attractive too."

Mazda 6 –
The below campaign for Mazda6 sells heavily on the "wild" & satisfying driving experience. Simple yet practical.

Miata MX5 –
This TVC comes with a short story line. Very dramatic.

CX7 –
"Commanding", "road presence", "Drivability" & Newly "Packaged".
This is what I gathered of CX7 after watching the clip. What about you?

RX8 –
A very humourous TVC for the famous RX8 Coupe.

Some "Oldies" for Mazda Fans.

121 –
Very "Jap Style" of advertising. Nicely thought out though.

626 –
A simple ad that shows the best of the 626.

Mazda3 GTS –
This is not a Classic Mazda Ad. It’s The FUNNIEST MAZDA Ad ever made! (Campaign for Mazda3 SP GTS hatch)

929 –
This is one classic that I almost forgot. very retro-styled.

Mazda 2 Auto –
This is not a classic, this is one cheeky TVC for the Mazda2 Automatic for the Euro market.

Mazda MPV –
Have you ever wonder why the below clip only show 2 angles most of the time? Go figure. Mazda Fans should know very well the reason why.

RX7 Efini –
No Mazda posting is complete without this retro-TVC for the RX7 Efini

RX7 Savanna & Mazda Bongo –
The below clip is 2 clips rolled into one. Enjoy.

I hope everyone had enjoyed the 5 episodes so far.

I will be featuring Honda, Mitsuoka, Suzuki & Daihatsu soon.
