Database for Sale? Ethical?

The number of “cold calls” I received recently had hit the roof.
 
Calls from Insurance companies, property companies, MLMs, slimming companies, fitness centres, banks selling credit cards & loans.

Just last night, I screamed at a stupid lady who claimed to be from an insurance company who doesn’t even know basic manners. I shall spare everyone the details here. The point of this article is, how the hell our mobile numbers ended up with these companies? Apparently someone is selling our mobile numbers and making money out of it. I view it as an intrusion of privacy.

Earlier, I received an email SPAM with the subject “Extend Marketing Reach – Singapore Database for Sale <<ADV>>”. Wow! The whole Singapore’s database is FOR SALE!”. And if there’s supply, there are bound to be demand somewhere. So, that could only mean one thing, more SPAM calls coming your way.

Hello, This is Singapore, this is Asia.

I received a call today in office. Not just any ordinary call. But a call from a "Managing Director" of a "specialized advertising agency" in Singapore. This woman was ranting on the phone which irritates me to the core. So what happened? Her staff called my staff to enquire on some media information, I told the staff that since our agreement with this agency has expired some 9 months ago, I told my staff that we may not go through this ad agency. Then I was told this "Managing Director" had called my staff and scolded her and later demanded to speak to the "boss" (which is me), next she called me and rant the same. As expected, she asked to speak my boss. Bad luck for her, I am the Boss. I told her off for her lack of courtesy and she even used words like "You don’t want me to say to your face what I think of your company". An eye-opening experience indeed. Maybe it’s her bad luck today, given my known character (which is pretty well-known) in the industry, I reacted the same way that she reacted. I was "diplomatically sarcastic."

I always live by the mandate of returning a favor by ten times. Meaning, if you are nice, I will return you ten folds, if the person had been nasty to me, good luck to the person as I will definitely return the bad attitude/deed by ten times too.

The way she talk irks me to the core. She represents an international ad agency brand, but behaved like a wild barbarian. She speaks as if we media owners have to give in to her whims & fansies just because she holds the client. What she don’t understand is, the client will not be her’s forever and the local media scene is smaller than a sesame seed. We will certainly cross path one day. Worse, we have been servicing "her client" for years even before she got posted to Singapore.

She claimed I was rude while she was the on the offensive right from the start. I have experienced more bitchy agency people than her and she thinks she can push her way through by using the company name and her title to corner a media owner? Well, anticipating what this idiot is capable of, I wrote her email and copied her regional Directors, the client and even everyone else who is not aware of her unprofessional behaviour-but need to know. Just right after the email was sent out, I received an email from this bitch asking to speak to my CEO. But the generic email was pointed and directed to me and not my CEO simply I made most of the business decisions in this company. What she expect to acheive by talking to my CEO, when my CEO will direct the matter back to me for my jurisdictional action?

In her email to my CEO, she word it so nicely that she had a "little brush" and "some issues" with our company and demanded a "face-to-face" meeting. Well, who she think she is? And she specifically mentioned that she had "recently took over the position of "Managing Director" and "new to Singapore’s market". My toes laughed like never before. New and yet arrogant? Wait till she meet some of nastiest media owners in Singapore. I am considered one of the "attitude" ones, but still not as extreme as some others. A chinese saying "There will always be another higher mountain", I think maybe she does not carry such values because she is totally foreign to Singapore’s culture and how things work here.

Is this how expatriates work in their country of origin? If everyone starts to demand and speaks to the "Boss" just to get things done, then I might as well sacked all my executives and managers working for me and have everything done by myself. After all, it is the "bossess" of this kind who wish to speak to a person of a higher authority only. She has such a biased and passe way of working, which is perfect misfit here in Singapore.  I hope international advertising agencies will select their "Managing Directors" carefully. For it will break the good name of the ad agency in such a saturated market like Singapore if the appointed person starts to behave in such an arrogant manner. Words spread faster than you can imagine, especially among media owners who mostly knew each other here. 

As an ex-co member of an association representing media owners in Singapore, I am certain to share this extraordinary experience I had with this agency bitch in the upcoming association meeting. Media Owners can be an ad agency’s best friends or worse Foes, depending who you are dealing with. In this case, she had just banged herself into a wall. Let’s see what her Regional Directors say when they received the email.

This "specialized advertising advertising" will be under my marked list for a long long time.
