Chicken Soup Series Returns – Part 1 Job Interview?

Dear Readers,

Welcome back.

Today marks the beginning (or return) of the Chicken Soup Series.

We all know how bad is the economy right now. Some much uncertainties and no one really knows where the world is heading.

In bad times, many lose jobs and and they are all over the streets, so naturally it is now the Employers’ Market.

However, given the high number of job-seekers in the market, it is a risk too that employers may pick the wrong candidate.

As an employer, I’ve had my share of employing wrong people too. One thing is for sure, during the interview, the candidates are all saints.

Why so? Because everything I ask, the answer will be yes. Let’s see;

Me             : Are you experienced in marketing?
Interviewee : Yes.
Me            : We work 5 & a half day week here sometimes 7. Can?
Interviewee : Yes.
Me            : We have very strict policies and regulations here, any problem?
Interviewee : Yes, er… No.

It is a heavy burden and definitely pressurizing, as the interviewer, you can’t really tell who is lying and who is being honest. Not to mention how sometimes the job is not in relation to the academic certification of the candidate. While some, and probably had been job-hunting for months, are desperate and their promise are even more unbelievable.

Me             : Are you experienced in marketing?
Interviewee : Yes. I am well versed in Marketing, and I can also do HR, Accounts, Logistics, Production, Security, Administration & Design too!
Me            : We work 5 & a half day week here sometimes 7. Can?
Interviewee : Yes. No Problem. I can work 7 days a week without taking MC or Leaves and I love to work from 7am to 11pm everyday. I can sleep in office too.
Me            : We have very strict policies and regulations here, any problem?
Interviewee : Yes Sir, my problem is, I have NO Problem. So can I start work tomorrow?

Ha ha ha.

On a serious note,

Jobseekers:
Do not despair, time may be hard, you must stay focus on your career objectives and do not jump into any opportunity that comes next. For all you know, you may jump from one hole to another. Be honest during interview and be direct with your answers. Never over promised and do not claim for credits for things not done by you. Employers are looking for honest & hardworking people these days. Yes, these days.

Employers:
Exercise fairness during candidates selection. Everyone deserves a fair chance from you. It does not matter how the person looks, or from what race, or from what religion, most importantly, what can this person contribute to your company in both short & long term. Salary amount is something that YOU must be comfortable at giving and do not paint too good or gloom a picture of your company’s current performance.

To close things up, I have 2 links below on a leaked video of a company in Taiwan conducting job interviews.

Please have a good laugh. See you soon!

  1. Ya, indeed…I have friends who sent out 80 resumes but hasn’t gotten any interviews yet…Fear of employing the wrong people, that is why the 3 or 6 months probation right?

  2. experiences taught me not to trust any candidates esp those who are "yes" persons. Cos once they started working, they will be still looking out for greener pastures. Its a waste of employer’s time to find another again.

  3. Kim> Sis, but it is also hard to single out the "Yes-mens" from the real "Yes" of approval too. It’s such a dirty market.
