“Per Impression = Scams”

Before I end the day, there is another speaker that I would like to mention here from last week’s seminar.

He is none other than Benjamin Edelman. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School, Negotiation, Organizations & Market Unit.

I am totally amazed by what he had presented.

He taught us how some digital/online advertising companies are using "per impression" to charge advertiser which works out to be a shameless scam.

I am not mentioning names here (as yet), but please do yourself a favor by visiting Ben’s website at http://www.benedelman.org/ and read about some of the unimaginable tactics that "some of the biggest digital media companies" are employing today to con advertising dollars.

I am glad I didn’t sign up any ads with one of them when they came to see me last year.

Phew.

Digital Advertising – So What’s The Problem?

I tried cheering myself up earlier due to an "unexpected day that was typically ruined as expected". Chim ah? (Profound)

Anyway, that’s not the point.

I tried to think of something that will make me giggle and ticklish enough to let myself break out in a few moments of laughter, just a little indulgence of brainless madness, for a Monday that was too heavy for me to take.

Anyway, with more reference to last week’s seminar on Digital Advertising by IAA, Rayana Pandey – Editor of Marketing Magazine Singapore shared something.

Her words, "Boss Not Online" sent many of the delegates including myself laughed.

Then my mind drifted to a scence whereby a media owner who are doing digital advertising and presenting to an advertiser about the benefits of advertising online and everything digitalized. After a long and elaborated sales talk and a 10/10 powerful pitch, the person listening just blurt out, "Yeah, it’s great, but my Boss Not Online."

Imagine the face of the media owner.

That gave me a reason to laugh today.

It did. Thanks Rayana.

Transparency vs Privacy

Transparency versus Privacy. This quote was taken from a speaker from a seminar I attended last week.

The seminar was titled "Digital Download. Behind the Headlines" organized by the International Advertising Association (IAA).

It is scary that the cyber world had so little privacy. Being transparent literally means privacy is badly compromised.

Have you ever tried to Google your own name?

Have you added anyone whom sent you a request to be added on social sites?

With a "Yes", you had just opened the door to a complete stranger with full access to all your photo albums, your profile, your job details, etc.

What if that "someone" had a motive or out to get something? You had just put yourself at a bigger risk of becoming the next internet fraud victim.

Information about individuals are so easy to obtain these days. I Googled my own name earlier and I found my 2 blogs, my youtube account, my flickr account, my forum, my linkedin account, my technorati account page, my icq page, my old resume on some job sites, my online activities and many more information of myself, complete with my profile opened to the public! Wow. I’ve managed to set most of them into "Private mode" or "Unsearchable" since. Phew!

Recently, I heard a story from a friend. He was lamentating that he is so "naked" now. He explained that his girlfriend "ransacked" his office computer, his personal laptop, his mobile phone and even checked on his emails, msn, etc. I can full understand how he feels. Whether there are things to hide or not, everyone is entitled to their own space, their little private corner. By being so opened and emptied every single things into the open field, this guy felt so "naked" and suddenly he also lost all his confidence. To make things worse, he started to feel very insecure. His girlfriend even has the password to all his online accounts! Now this guy is so withdrawn that he deleted all his contacts from his msn account keeping only his colleagues and he had decided to stop all his online activities and concentrate on playing "Bejeweled", at least that does not leave any traces of him. This guy must be terrified to go online again.

Transparency is good. On the expense of your Privacy.
