Dreaded April of 2009

The air of retrenchment hung low and eerily close.

Everyone is worried about their jobs. People around me seems unsettled. The local media is not helping by announcing the possible high retrenchment rate in the coming April 2009. Many MNCs ends their financial year in every March, thus April will be a new year in corporate language. To start off the new financial year slim with cost-cutting measures in mind, many will fall victim to the bad economy by getting axed.

A typical job ad in the press will attract thousands of applicants, the Recruit segment of our national newspaper are getting so thin that I thought it was a Special Feature section. (Joe, sounds familiar?) And visibly, there are more people lining up at Walk-In Interviews and the recently Career Fair at Suntec also saw an incredible increased of visitorship as compared to previous years.

Overheard at a trade event recently;

A: "I am employing now and I am afraid to advertise on the newspaper."
B: "Why so?"
A: "The last time I placed an advertisement for an Admin Clerk, I received almost 4000 applications!"
B: "Oh! That is overwhelming! Isn’t it good that now you have many choices to pick the right candidate?"
A: "The problem now is, who is going to go through the resumes and interview the candidates? It will take months to complete!"

And spotted on a Business Forum;

"When I received the hundreds of resumes, I have no choice but to separate them into the following order;
Expensive Singaporeans, Less Expensive Malaysians, Cheap Indonesians, Cheaper Thai & Filipinos, Even Cheaper Indians/ Bangladeshis and Cheapest   China Mainlanders. With average wages dropping on the lower end of the scale, there is little choice but to employ from the lowest of the scale. Quality is second when it comes to cost saving"

The job market is not what it used to be anymore. In 1998 during the Asian Financial Crisis, we employers do not have so much "alternatives" right?

Don’t you dread this April?

  1. It is unfairly rated. of course. How can you compare a citizen and a none citizen? We ask for more because we live here and we have family commitment. Sometime the market actually pay MORE to foreigners than a local asked for just because they think they are better.
