Looking for a Job? Show Up for Interview!

I am hiring at the moment.

After the ads, resumes started flowing in.

I got quite disappointed with the candidates.

Why?

I take my time to scan through every single resume, then filter out the irrelevant copies. Then I review their experiences, expected salary then finally selected a few.

Then I got my girl to call them and arrange for interviews.

On the interview day itself, some came late, some did not show up, some reject our calls when we called them, some just bluntly said they said they found a better offer. (They have not even been interview by me, what do they mean by "better offer") Sometimes, I even wasted one whole day in the office sitting around and waiting for interviewees to show up.

It seems to me that the "Quality" of the job seekers had dipped. Especially the younger ones.

I wonder what the schools had been teaching these "kids".

  1. Haaa…be patient, that’s mainly due to more choices and opportunities out there and also the youngest now a day doesn’t have to worry about their rice bowl. (see what if the enconmics dipped).

  2. Yes! Jaded, our side faced the same issues… agreed to come for interview but ended, they never call and made us (me) keep calling them… till I gave up.

  3. Jim > Precisely. Maybe they have rich parents or what. Let’s see what happens if next year the recession really comes (Touch Wood!)

  4. LOL. Not surprised that you got this type of results. Nowadays those youngsters simply have attitude problem.
Keep trying bah. I believe you will get good ones soon.
Why not hire foreigners? Maybe they would perform better.

  5. Henry > You will be surprised with some the cover letters they sent in. very impressive at first read, then turns out something else, haha.

  6. Janice > No way I am going to hire foreigners at the moment. Got some really bad incident months ago which I m still trying to get over. I need Media Managers for my Digital media dept at the moment.

  7. By younger ones are you referring to the late 80s kids? Actually the school system don’t really TEACH them how to behave in many areas and best they think they know everything… anyway what the role of Media manager? Digital media sound fun. :P

  8. Between skills and attitude, hire one with good attitude instead of good skills. Skills can be acquired through learning but not attitude.
    Henry

  9. Leon > Jackpot. It’s those "Late Eighties Kids" indeed. Media Manager for Digital media? Ah, its complicated, hahaha.

  10. ahh… next time don’t sit around in the office waiting for interviewees.
Attend those that are on time, those late ones just ignore because they already don’t show sincerity and seriousness for the job – is one of the signs how important this job is to them and how organise they are. However, if applicant does call to inform they will be late or due to work requires to change the timing, either you arrange a new timing or you agree with their timing – this kind still have hope… .

  11. I will be more worried on those kids in the late 90s onwards, because their teachers are usually the early 80s and before then. Recently my niece’s homework was found unmark since JULY and was informed that there’s a change in teacher-in-charge. If teacher do not show the urgency of the children’s homework marked, then it is telling the children it is not important, and how are these kids going to revise and know what is correct and wrong? And afew times I’d also found wrong answer being marked correctly. Parents having Children needs to be cautious on these, if not, you probably scolded your children for nothing when it is not their fault but the teachers.

  12. Daph > Shocked to hear your niece’s homework left unmark while waiting pending changes, somewhere in system is very wrong indeed!. I have enough of interviewees. Finally narrowed down to 1 lady and 1 guy.Now to roll the dice.Cheers!
