Lessy, The Old Cow

Last week, a guy called me on the phone and requested to see me.

I was kinda shocked how this person actually gained access to my mobile number.

Citing that he is "already" in the area, I granted him a visit.

Let’s call him Lessy.

Lessy came into my room and handed over his resume. I was like shocked and puzzled. After I realized what’s happening, I sat him down and I went through his resume. Very experienced and resourceful I thought to myself. Lessy had done OOH Media, Publishing and other related sales. Then I realised he is 13 years my senior. So I asked him if he has any problem reporting to someone so much younger than him.

He said "No Problem".

I further added that I am not an easy person to work with as my working standards are ridiculously high.

He said "No Problem".

I also told him that work performance and discipline are above everything in my department.

He said "No Problem".

He was literally begging me for a job. I took pity on him, being divorced & at middle age, I referred him to my Executive Director whom immediatetly interviewed him (As 2nd interview) and offered him a position the very next day.

Day 1
When he showed up for work 4 days ago, things starts going wrong. He is especially long-winded, has his own set of ideas on how things should be done and so on.
When I gave him orientation and taught him product knowledge, he asked about other non-related stuff. When I tried to correct him, he retorted defensively. And when I try to make him understand the company culture, he told me something to the effect of "I eat more salt then you ate rice". I got really offended, but kept my cool. In defence, I told him things that work in 2005 or 1995 does not work that well today in 2008. Lessy’s explanations continued.

Day 2 was more site visiting and explaining the product knowledge to him. However, I noted that he is not interested in whatsoever that I taught him. Rather, he just want to tell me about his "Past Glories". I kept my cool again.

Day 3 In the morning, Lessy came to office and claimed that "No One" is able to "Help" him or "Assist" him. Then he went to the Executive Director’s room and share whatever he had shared with me the day earlier. I fumed. The ED is rushing a major project tender and has to take time off to "entertain" him for things that Lessy had already shared with me and I approved a day before. I gathered the whole team together and verbally disciplined everyone. I knew it wasn’t the team’s fault but Lessy’s. But I have to do what I did to get a simple message across to this Lessy.

I had a short discussion with Lessy. Since he has got "so much experience", I asked him to devised a business plan for the product segment that he was tasked to handle. He came to my room a couple of times to ask me if he can do this & that, I told him "put everything down" in plan and show me for discussion. After 4 hours out meeting clients, I came back to the office and requested to see what he had "produced". Lessy came to me with ONE A4 paper with 12 sentence. I freaked out. I later gotten another manageress, SN to talk to him about the Business Plan, he refused to commute or share anything with her.

Lessy came to me again later in the evening and asked me if he can be given another "chance". I told him "why not?" Then he told he will ONLY want to be trained under me and not any other person. That freaked me out a second time! I told Lessy that he is supposed to report to that Manageress (SN) and I do not see any reason why Lessy cannot be trained under her. SN has got management potential and putting Lesy under her is a perfect fit.

I told Lessy off politely. He is 3 days old in the company and he is trying to dictate who trains him and who he wants to work under. This is totally unacceptable by any corporate standards.

Then someone saw Lessy packing his stuff into a paperbag before he left office. A quick check with a Media Director from an ad agency that I work closely with told me this Lessy guy was banned from many ad agencies. I was shocked. I quickly informed my ED.

Day 4. I had an operation meeting this morning. I was giving instructions to each of my staff and when it was Lessy’s turn, he just mentioned that he had resigned and had handed his letter to the ED. With ten thousand blood vessels exploding and blood pressure escalating, I ordered a male staff to escort him out of the office. I lost my cool. I slammed the door behind him and that shocked the whole office.

Strangely after Lessy left the office, it seems that the morale of my staff were back to normal and everyone starts to be productive again. An eerie silence followed after his departure but soon overtaken by a sense of serenity and peace. Things is NOW back to normal again.

I really wondered which company will fall victim to this Lessy next. Maybe I should send out a press release to inform the industry.

If you are a media owner or media agency that is currently recruiting new staff, and if a "mature man" with a name that starts with "L" and has the surname as "Yeo", please be careful, be really really careful.
